To fulfill this purpose, Ibrahim Medical College (IMC) has established at 1/1, Ibrahim Sarani, Shegunbaghicha in the year 2002 by Bangladesh Diabetic Samity (BADAS) after the name of late national professor Dr. Md. Ibrahim v/ho was a legendary physician, teacher, and social reformer. BADAS has established Ibrahim Medical College with a vision to develop it as a ‘trend-setter’ medical institution in terms of a high standard of medical education and research. IMC has large and experienced faculty members with a well-equipped college and a multi-disciplinary hospital facility. BIRDEM General Hospital which is an about 750-bed multi-disciplinary hospital complex at Shahbagh is the teaching hospital of IMC. The hospital has been recognized nationally and internationally as a center of excellence for medical services and research and has been designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating center on diabetes and endocrine disorders.

Prof. Mohammad Ibrahim’s contribution in the field of medicine in general and diabetes, in particular, has been nothing less than phenomenal. He was a successful physician, a gifted teacher, a talented organizer, and a great social reformer. Prof. Ibrahim was the founder of the Diabetic Association of Pakistan and later of Bangladesh. With his initiative Diabetic Association’s small outpatient clinic at Segunbagicha, has grown over the years into the imposing prestigious BIRDEM at Shahbagh, presently designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre on Diabetes, Endocrine, and Metabolic Disorders, only of its kind in Asia. BIRDEM’s long journey from Segunbaghicha to Shahbag is a tale of the dedication and devotion of Prof. Md. Ibrahim. He was a great physician. His humility to his patients was genuine. He used to say to his humblest of patients ‘I am grateful to you for the opportunity you have given me to serve you’. Deep empathy and compassion were characteristics of his dealing with his patients, especially those who were poor and in pain. As a teacher, he always laid emphasis on punctuality, discipline, devotion to duty, and practice rather than precept. Prof. Ibrahim instilled confidence and trust in his students and helped them to inculcate the habit of deducting reasoning, inquiry, and adherence to clinical methods.

The College has two campuses. The main campus is located at 1/A, Ibrahim Sarani, Shegunbagicha, Dhaka-1000 and second campus is at 122, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Shahbag, Dhaka-1000.

    The departments are well furnished, fully air conditioned and adequately equipped to accommodate class rooms, dissection hall, laboratories, museums & library. Each department has been provided with computers having internet facilities with access to Hinari, Scanner, OHP and other audiovisual aids. All the lecture rooms are equipped with audiovisual equipment including multimedia set up.

HOSPITAL

   BIRDEM General Hospital is the teaching hospital of the college. It is about 750 bedded multidisciplinary Hospital Complex at Shahbagh and Shegunbagicha. It has already earned national and international reputation as a center of excellence for medical services and research, presently designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre.

  The hospital is housed in two magnificent buildings, one is 15 stories & the other is 13 stories. Over 4,168 patients are attending the outpatient departments daily. The in-patient departments among 750 beds 30% beds are free. BIRDEM Academy runs 14 post-graduation courses in different disciplines. Besides postgraduate students, medical students of IMC (Ibrahim Medical College) & internee doctors of IMC are placed in all the departments of BIRDEM.

Achievements of IMC

  IMC was established to create an environment and culture that is conducive to achieving excellence in not only academic and research fields but also in creativity and innovativeness. Since its inception, the institution has successfully contributed towards excellence in medical education and research. A few of these are mentioned below:

  • IMC started its journey in 2002 and will admit the 13th batch in 2014. Since its inception, many students of IMC have secured merit positions and distinctions (honors) in the Professional MBBS examinations under Dhaka University.
  • Students from IM1 to IM 5 are eligible to pursue higher academic courses. IM 6 and IM7 are undergoing internships. A record number of our students have entered the post-graduate courses, both at home and abroad. Many have already finished their courses.
  • Apart from the academic accomplishments, the students of IMC have already shown their brilliance in extracurricular activities in the national and international arena. They have participated in national debate competitions and secured prizes. IMC students took part in an International Quiz Competition in Physiology held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the last week of August 2013.
  • IMC has regularly published a high-quality IMC Medical Journal for the last 7 years. The journal is indexed in ISBN and is web-linked to Bangia Jol (a web-based database for Bangladeshi medical journals).
  • As a part of its commitment towards excellence in research, IMC has established an annual research fund of Taka 2.5 million for its faculty development. Allocation of such a research fund is unique in the country – be it for the private or public medical colleges. So far, eight research projects are ongoing.
  • A successful breakthrough in research is the recent detection of a rare bacterium called Burkholderia pseudomallei in the soil for the first time in Bangladesh by the researchers of the Microbiology Department of IMC.
  • Several faculty members of IMC are recipients of research grants from within and outside the country. So far it has received research grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh (MOSICT), Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) and Bangladesh Medical Association of North America.
  • Inter-institutional collaboration: The academic and research activities have led other institutions to establish collaboration with IMC. At present, IMC has consistent research and academic collaboration with Dhaka University, BRAC University, and Stamford University.
  • The faculties of IMC are actively involved in collaborative postgraduate studies with other universities in the country. At present several students from Dhaka University, BRAC, and Stamford Universities are doing Ph.D., M. Phil, and MSc research work at IMC (DU 1 Ph.D., 1 MPhil, 1 MSc; BRCA1 MSc; Stamford 4 MSc).
  • Several faculty members of IMC have been serving as members of ERC and IRB of ICDDR, B, and BSMMU respectively.
  • Dr. Shamshad Jahan, Associate Professor of Obs & Gyne was awarded Ekushey Padak & Faizunnessa Chowdhury Award for outstanding contribution in the field of women’s health care in 2011.

Medicine-Course Description

Departmental Objectives

At the end of clinical postings in Medicine, the undergraduate medical students will be able to:

♦ acquire appropriate knowledge, attitude and skill to become an effective doctor for the society

♦ elicit an appropriate clinical history, and physical findings,  elucidate the clinical problems based on these, and identify the means of solving the problems

♦ write requisition form for relevant laboratory tests and perform common bedside lab procedures, justify

♦ outline the principles of management of various diseases considering the patient’s socio-economic

♦ diagnose and manage medical emergencies

♦ recognize or provide competent initial care and refer complicated cases to secondary and tertiary care centers at an appropriate time

♦ perform clinical procedures

♦ possess the knowledge to consider the ethical and social implications of his/ her decision

♦ demonstrate the art of medicine involving communication, empathy, and reassurance with patients

♦ develop an interest in care for all patients and evaluate each patient as a person in society

♦ have an open attitude to the newer developments in medicine to keep abreast of new knowledge

♦ learn how to adapt new ideas in situations where necessary

♦ learn to keep the clinical records for future references

EXPENSE OF THE STUDY

Development, Tuition, and other fees payable at the time of admission have been fixed at taka Eighteen lacs only. All payments are to be made in full at the time of admission.

Monthly tuition fees have been fixed at Tk eight thousand only. Tuition fees for one month shall be payable at the time of admission. Subsequently, tuition fees are payable on a monthly basis. But one can pay in advance for any number of months. Students who fail to pass their final professional examination will not have to pay the prescribed tuition fees for the period beyond five years. Except for University fees (payable to Dhaka University), no other fees in whatever form will be claimed by the College.

FOREIGN STUDENT ADMISSION PROCESS

A foreign applicant must fulfill the following conditions and requirements in order to be considered for admission at Ibrahim Medical College (IMC) or in other medical colleges (government & private) of Bangladesh:

  1. The applicant/candidate must pass the Secondary and Higher Secondary School Certificate (SSC and HSC) examinations or equivalent examinations namely O and A levels.  The SSC and HSC or equivalent certificates (O and A level) must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the respective country.
  2. The minimum academic eligibility criteria for admission in medical colleges are GPA 7.0 for SSC+HSC and GPA 3.5 in Biology.
  3. An application should be made through Bangladesh High Commission/Embassy. The application form is available from August/September onwards at the Bangladesh High Commission/Embassy of the respective country.  The candidate must mention the name of the medical college of his choice in the application form. The application should be submitted to Bangladesh High Commission/Embassy Office with a demand draft (DD) of US$ 60.00 (sixty) only made payable to Director, Medical Education HMPD, DGHS, Mohakhali, Dhaka.
  4. If the candidate’s choice is IMC, the student is required to fill up the Foreign Students’ application form of IMC (available at our website: ). Photocopies of the passport, SSC/HSC certificates should be furnished with the application. This will help us to track the application in the DGHS office.
  5. Based on the application form submitted in the Bangladesh HC/Embassy, the DGHS (Director General of Health Services) office will determine the eligibility for admission at IMC or in medical colleges of Bangladesh.  If found eligible, the application will be sent to IMC or to the respective medical colleges of choice. Once this procedure is completed, only then, IMC will provide you with an official offer letter of admission.
  6. Regarding Fee structure for foreign students at IMC – the student needs to pay a one-time Admission fee of US $ 27,000 (twenty-seven thousand) and subsequently, a monthly tuition fee of US $ 250 (two hundred fifty) till the student is allowed to sit in the Final Professional Exam which is 60 months. Therefore, a total fee for 5 years is US $ 42,000.00 (US$ 27000.00+US$15000.00). There is no additional fee except to pay for the four University Examination fees only which are nominal and to be paid to the Dhaka University and not to IMC. The admission fee varies in different private medical colleges. Our fee is the lowest among the private medical colleges.
  7. Hostel accommodation cost for foreign students is the same as Bangladeshi students which is Tk. 5000.00 per month exclusive of the amount mentioned above. Food and other subsistence costs are around Tk. 5000.00 per month. Foreign students’ accommodation is also available at the International Hostel for Foreign Students of Dhaka University.

About Dhaka
